Enjoy Life – By going out of your way to help someone

“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”, the “golden rule” or “ethic of reciprocity” is a principle that is common to all the great religions and embraced by many cultures. Doing things for others is also one of the key strategies of Positive Psychology which has been shown to enhance happiness. So that all makes “do unto others…” sound like a pretty good principle for a long and happy life!

If this isn’t yet a feature of your current lifestyle then, like all other lifestyle change, some deliberate practice is going to be required until it becomes second nature.

It is quite easy for us to sink into feeling miserable when we’re struggling with weight and on the brink of feeling defeated. Changing compulsive addictive behaviour (like eating too much) is hard enough let alone also feeling miserable. One of the very best ways of cheering up and getting more positive is to think of someone who needs help and go out of your way to help them.

If you’re skeptical, do the experiment and see how your mood improves as you deliberately set out to see life through the eyes of others and reach out to care for those in need.
