Working towards lifelong recovery from obesity

Enjoy Life – Right now

This life is not a dress rehearsal. Strive to thoroughly enjoy what we have; starting now.

Our challenge in overcoming obesity is to integrate the principles of recovery with how we ‘do’ everyday life. While we continue to work on our individual strategies we must also not lose sight of enjoying our lives right now.

As we lose weight, our options for engaging in enjoyable activities increases. The discomfort from chaffing skin goes away, sleep is more refreshing, cutting our own toenails becomes a easier and old activities like riding a bike, perhaps with our children, becomes a possibility again.

In the meantime, as we quietly metabolise our excess stored fat through increasing our activity levels and getting our overeating under better control, here are four things we can usefully do each day to increase our enjoyment in life:

1. Learn something new

2. Have a meaningful conversation with someone

3. Appreciate an object of beauty

4. Undertake an altruistic act

Each of these need only be small events and thus not take a lot of time. They can be enjoyed right now.

Actively finding out about something that’s been a loose end in our minds can be very satisfying. Having a brief encounter with someone but conversing a little deeper than superficial comments about the weather deepens our connection with others. Deliberately looking for something of beauty helps us be in the now and puts us into a positive frame of mind. Doing something useful and good for someone else takes us away from mulling over our own problems and helps us feel more peaceful inside.
