Working towards lifelong recovery from obesity

Persist – Make the change

Everyone wants to lose weight without having to put any real energy into it. But putting things off until apopo (tomorrow) is literally a killer when it comes to obesity and recovery. Procrastination about taking the steps to make the permanent changes necessary is one of the most common reasons people don’t get far on the long and happy journey. Lifestyle change requires planning, becoming more active, eating in a fundamentally different way and following through without making up any more excuses

It is natural to want to lose weight without having to make any permanent changes to the normal slothful modern lifestyle and instant gratification that has often brought obesity about. That’s human nature; so is making up excuses.

A week of “kickstart” or even a month of trying something new might be palatable because it isn’t permanent and there is an end in sight. But what is required is a commitment to permanent change for the rest of our life – beginning today.

The two key changes are: firstly, changing from being a couch potato to being a generally more active person, including doing something that gets us really puffing briefly every day if possible (not just every now and then or in the weekends); and secondly, making some radical changes to the amount and type of food we consume.
